Liebherr Aerospace Will Supply Wing Tip System Parts for 777X

Liebherr-Aerospace has been selected by Boeing Commercial Airplanes to provide three components of the Boeing 777X’s folding wing tip system. The contract calls for Liebherr-Aerospace to provide components for the fold subsystem, the latch pin actuator, and the secondary lock actuator. Liebherr-Aerospace will design a condensed, very dependable and powerful fold subsystem based on their knowledge in high-lift systems, gears, torque tubes, and hydraulic power drive units.

Through the use of a motor and rotating actuator, the system will be able to fold the wing tip after the aircraft has landed. This feature will reduce the wingspan of the wide-body aircraft by 3.5 meters on each side (7 in total) from 71.8 meters to 64.8 meters. Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, Lindenberg (Germany), Liebherr-Aerospace’s worldwide center of excellence for flight control and landing gear systems, will develop, design, manufacture, and service all three components.

The Boeing 777X is a twin-engine aircraft that is the largest and most efficient twin-engine jet in the world. The aircraft’s large wingspan would typically exclude it from using the same airport gates as the current Boeing 777. However, the innovative wing tip technology will allow the 777X to still be in the same wingspan category as the 777. During the flight and take off, the wing tips of the 777X extended to the original horizontal position which provides an increase in span and fuel efficiency.
